THE SCHOOL IS BURNING!
The Struggle about all-day-school
After the withering results of the Pisa study for Germany, educational policies have become a central issue, even in the region Brandenburg. By the school-year 2005/2006 a quarter of the schools should develop a whole-day offer for pupils, do more for the scholastically weaker and treat the scholastically better more personally, at least in principle.
Eisenhüttenstadt is an area which residents, save for pensioners, are tending to leave, so an attractive school system is essential for its survival.
For a year the Goethe primary school has been struggling for recognition as a all-day school. The test-run with whole-day attendance has been successful, but the mayor prefers to invest in pensioners still voting than in children not voting for another decade, and the education authority wishes to have the whole-day school set up in the school’s nursery to save costs.
The school management, staff, parents and pupils are upset. Will they as a bloc manage to change the educational authority’s policy and to smooth the way for school for the whole day?
