Thomas Grube
Born in Berlin, Thomas Grube founds his first production company memphis productions in 1993. His first feature, LOVE IS THE MESSAGE (1994), is a comprehensive record of the early 90's Berlin techno-generation, of which he is part of himself.
In 1996 Grube meets his partner Uwe Dierks. Both are inspired by the personality and music of the American icon Leonard Bernstein and turn their attention to the genre of classical music. Together, as directors and producers, they realize several documentaries and music films.
In 1999 Thomas Grube and Uwe Dierks found BOOMTOWN MEDIA. Grube directs and together they produce a multitude of films. Amongst their most best known productions are RHYTHM IS IT! (2004) and TRIP TO ASIA (2008). Both cinema documentaries premiere at the Berlinale; they belong to the most successful German documentaries.
For the cinema documentary RHYTHM IS IT! Thomas Grube receives the Bavarian Film Award in 2004 and the German Film Award in 2005 (Best Documentary). Other awards include the German Critics’ Prize 2005, the German Cinema Guild Prize 2005, the Franz Hofer Prize 2005, the Public’s Prize at the Minneapolis International Film Festival, the Impact of Music Award at Nashville, the Dance Screen Brighton Award, the Japanese Cultural Minister’s Prize and the ECHO Classic Award for Best DVD of the year 2006.
For his film TRIP TO ASIA he receives the German Cinema Guild Award 2008 for Best Documentary, the Second Prize of the "Tiempo de Historia" Award at the 2008 Valladolid International Film Festival, and wins the ECHO Classic 2009 for best DVD of the year.
In 2004, Grube and Dierks launched the world sales company BOOMTOWN MEDIA INTERNATIONAL to handle the global distribution of their films’ licenses.
Thomas Grube is a member of the German Film Academy.
